When companies or teams implement agile methods, they tend to focus on micro level. They do stand-ups, facilitate retros and develop product increments in iterative cycles. Companies usually adopt agile methodologies because they want to harvest the fruits of the all-to-well known promises about more productivity and faster development, so they make changes where they are seemingly obvious: At a team level. While this approach might be a good start, it soon reaches its limits and ignores the depth of change which is necessary for a successful agile transformation. In a truly agile organization people have the capacity to learn, grow and thrive. Becoming truly agile means looking beyond the templates which are provided by popular frameworks. It also means adopting agile values at a leadership and cultural level. We will demonstrate how we built our customer-value-driven organization with focus on agile culture, servant leadership, customer engagement, team ownership, continuous learning, discovery mindset, self-organization and empowerment. This is our success story of transforming a top-down hierarchical company into a modern, agile organization. It includes replacing bureaucracy and strict hierarchy with quick response to changes, flexible resources and leaders who listen to their employees, motivate them, empower them and help them develop. We will show concrete examples of our organizational charts, career paths, buddy and advocate program, internal training academy, hackathons and more.
